Barbara Westphal

Violist Barbara Westphal is a professor at the Musikhochschule Lübeck, Germany, and is a featured soloist with orchestra


s in Europe and in the US. She plays in the Trio Gasparo Da Salo with Ani Kavafian (violin) and Gustav Rivinius (cello). Ms. Westphal was top prize winner at 1983 Munich International Viola Competition (ARD) and was awarded the Busch Prize the same year. Her recordings can be found on the Bridge, Helicon, Centaur, Wergo and CPO labels.

For seven years she was the violist of the Delos String Quartet, USA,

winner of the 1981 Colmar International String Quartet Competition, France. Additionally, she has appeared as a guest artist at many events, including: Music From Marlboro, Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Sarasota Music Festival, Music In The Mountains (all USA), Incontri In Terra di Siena, Italy, Vaasa, Finldand, Budapest, Hungarey and Schleswig- Holsitein Festival, Germany, to name just a few.

In 2009 she founded the Bartholdy String Quintet with violinists Anke Dill and Ulf Schneider, violist Volker Jacobsen and cellist Gustav Rivinius.
