John Lundgren, Baritone

John Lundgren

John Lundgren is a dramatic baritone with an expressive stage appearance. He combines his powerful voice with an exquisite, theatrical understanding of the dramatic, operatic repertoire. Among his signature roles you find some notorious Wagner roles such as The Flying Dutchman and Kurwenal and often also the evil characters the bad guys of the operatic literature like Scarpia and Pizarro.
John Lundgren is born and raised in Sweden. While still attending The Opera Academy in Copenhagen he quite extraordinarily joined the soloist-ensemble at The Royal Theatre, Copenhagen. His debut here was as Schaunard in La Bohme.
John has portrayed several of the most important, dramatic baritone characters at his home stage in Copenhagen such as Paolo Albiani, Heerrufer, Conte di Luna, Enrico Ashton, Giorgio Germont, Posa and Amonasro which he sung together with Roberto Alagna at the prestigious opening production of Aida at the new opera house in Copenhagen. Lately, John has made his debut in as diverse roles as Escamillo, Scarpia, Wozzeck, Kurwenal and Tarquinius in Brittens The Rape of Lucretia.
During 2007 he sang Pizarro at the Danish National Opera. He returned to this opera house in 2008 to make his debut as Fliegender Hollnder with tremendous success. And he was invited to sing this role again at Teatro Prez Galds in Las Palmas in 2010. Further-more, John Lundgren made his Tokyo Opera debut as Scarpia in 2009.
2011, he sang Carlo Grard in Keith Warners Andrea Chenier production at the Bregenzer Festspiele. John sang the part of Jack Rance in Christof Loys production at the Royal Opera Stockholm with Nina Stemme as Minnie. Recently he had his debut as Alberich in Wagners Rheingold in Geneva. He then gave his debut in Munich as Barak in Frau ohne Schatten and as Wanderer in Leipzig.
Contemporary opera is also an important part of Johns repertoire. In 2005 he sang the demanding part of Prospero in The Tempest by Thomas Ads conducted by the composer himself. He also appeared at the Drottningholm-production of Cecilia and the Monkey King, by Reine Jnsson, where he sang nothing less than four different roles. In Gothenborg he performed alongside Nina Stemme in the world creation of Notorious, an opera after the film of Ingmar Bergman.
In 2016 he gave his debut as Wotan in Die Walkre at the Bayreuth Festival and sang his first complete Ring as Wotan/Wanderer at the Royal Opera in Stockholm alongside Nina Stemme. In 2018 he returned as Wotan in Walkre and also as Alberich for the complete Ring under Kirill Petrenko to Munich and went then to Hamburg for Wagners Hollnder.
In 2010, he was honoured Ridder af Dannebrogordenen (Knight of Dannebrog) by HM The Queen of Denmark.
Among his future projects in 2018 are: Wotan in the complete Ring at Covent Garden in London and Hamburg and his debut as Count Tomsky (Pique Dame) in London.
