Sébastien Dubé

Sebastien Dubé began his musical studies at Conservatoire du Québec, where he graduated with a Dîplome d’études supérieures, continuing at Rice University (Houston, Texas) and then for two years at the University of Southern California, where he completed his Master’s degree,  studying both jazz and classical music. His principal teachers were Luc Sévigny, Paul Ellison, Dennis Trembly, John Clayton and Edwin Barker. Dubé worked as a freelancer in North America for two years with different orchestras, such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Houston Symphony, l’Orchestre Symphonique de Québec, etc., before moving to Scandinavia. From 1993 to 1996 he was Assistant Principal Double Bass at the Bergen Philharmonic; from 1996 to 2000 Principal Bass of Norrlands Opera. In 2000 he took up the position of Principal Bass of the Swedish Chamber Orchestra. He has also appeared as a soloist with some of these orchestras.

His entire life has been devoted to working with different types of music, mostly jazz, folk music and of course classical – today, parallel to his orchestra career, he works with jazz in the Ivar Kolve Trio, Jonas Knutson Quartet, and in the duo Maria Johanson and Sébastien Dubé (bass and vocal), among others. His folk music partners include the Ale Möller Band, Duo Nyckelharpa and Bass (Torbjörn Näsbom), Harv, etc. In his remaining time, he organises concerts mixing different types of music and musicians together, including world music, jazz, folk or classical and sometimes even with symphony orchestras!

Sébastien Dubé recently began teaching at the Domaine Forget Summer Festival in Québec, coaching for the Baltic Youth Philharmonic and now also holds positions on the faculties at Örebro Universitet and Ingesund Högskola.

His goal is to learn as much as he can about music, with the help of his bass
